How to Password Protect a PDF Online
Add PDF password protection in three simple steps. No software installation required.
Add Your PDF
Select a PDF from your device, or drop it into the tool.
Choose Your Protection
Enter a password to open the file. You can also set an owner password and choose whether readers may copy, print, or edit it.
Protect and Download
Click “Protect PDF,” then download your password-protected copy.
How Does the PDF Password Protection Tool Work?
The CompressFly Protect PDF tool uses AES-256 encryption to add password protection without turning your pages into images. An opening password controls access to the document. You can also use an owner password and permission settings to limit copying, printing, and editing in PDF readers that support those restrictions. Your document and passwords are processed locally in your browser rather than uploaded to a server. Download a protected copy for sharing while keeping the original file unchanged. The tool is free, with no signup required.
What "processed locally" means
- Your PDF is not uploaded to a server
- The passwords you enter stay in your browser
- PDF encryption happens on your device
- The protected copy is created locally for download
An Open Password or PDF Permissions?
Requiring a password to read a PDF is different from limiting what readers can do after opening it. Use either option, or combine them.
| What you need | Password to open the file | Owner password and permissions |
|---|---|---|
| Control access | Readers need a password to open the PDF | Anyone can open it if no open password is set |
| Limit reader actions | An open password alone does not restrict copying, printing, or editing | Set copying, printing, and editing permissions in compatible readers |
| Share the password | Give the open password to the people who need to read the document | Keep a separate owner password to yourself |
Permissions depend on the PDF reader and are not a substitute for an open password. If you leave the owner password blank, the open password is used for both.
Why Use CompressFly to Password Protect a PDF?
Easy to Use
Add password protection without navigating a full PDF editing suite. The focused tool keeps an everyday document-protection task straightforward.
More Control over Access
An opening password helps limit who can view a shared copy. It gives you a practical access check before private document contents can be read.
No Installation Needed
Prepare the protected copy in your browser without setting up desktop software. There is no separate security application to install for the task.
Free Without Signup
Password protection does not require a paid PDF subscription here. You can use the tool and keep the result without an account or payment details.
Keep Your Original
The protected version is saved as a new copy. You can keep your original document available for your own work while preparing a password-protected version to share.
Private Password Handling
Your document and chosen password stay on your device. Protection is applied locally, so neither needs to be uploaded to a processing server.

Protect PDF FAQ
How do I password protect a PDF online?
Protect your PDF in three steps: 1. Select a PDF file. 2. Enter a password in “Password to open the file” and choose any permission restrictions you need. 3. Click “Protect PDF,” then download the protected document.
Can I restrict copying, printing, or editing a PDF?
Yes. Turn off the copying, printing, or editing permissions you want to restrict. These settings are enforced by PDF readers that honor them, but some software can ignore them. They do not prevent screenshots or hide information from someone who can open the document. To remove sensitive text or images before sharing, use Redact PDF.
Do I need both an open password and an owner password?
No. Enter an open password to require a password for viewing. A separate owner password is optional; if you leave it blank, the open password is used for both. If you want readers to open the PDF freely but limit copying, printing, or editing, leave the open password blank, set an owner password, and choose the restrictions. Use different passwords if readers should not have owner-level access.
Will password protection reduce PDF quality?
No. The tool adds encryption without re-encoding images or converting pages into pictures. It does not compress the document or lower image resolution. Password protection is not a way to reduce file size; use Compress PDF before protecting it if you need a smaller file.
Can I change the password on an already protected PDF?
Yes, but unlock the PDF first. This tool adds new password protection; it does not replace an existing opening password directly. Use Unlock PDF with the correct password, then protect the unlocked copy here. Only change protection on documents you are authorized to manage.
What happens if I forget my PDF password?
This tool cannot recover or reset a forgotten opening password. Keep the password somewhere safe, such as a password manager, and store an original copy in a secure location. When sharing the protected PDF, send the password separately from the document.
Can I password protect multiple PDFs at once?
This tool protects one PDF at a time. Download the result, then choose “Protect another PDF” to process the next document. If the files should become one protected document, merge the PDFs first and add the merged file here.
Are my PDF and passwords uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser encrypts the PDF and creates the protected copy for download. Your document, open password, and owner password are not sent to a processing server.
Is this PDF password protection tool free?
Yes. Password protect your PDF for free, with no registration, credit card, or software installation required.
