How to Edit PDF Metadata Online
Update PDF document properties in three simple steps. No software installation required.
Add Your PDFs
Select one or more PDFs to view their current document information.
Update the Document Details
Choose a file and edit its title, author, or other metadata. Each PDF has its own fields to update.
Save and Download
Save your changes and download the updated PDFs separately or together in a ZIP.
How Does the PDF Metadata Editor Work?
The CompressFly PDF metadata editor shows the document information stored in your PDFs and lets you update it. Correct an author name, give a report a clearer title, add a subject or keywords, or clear a field you no longer want to include. Each PDF keeps its own editable details, so different documents can have different titles and authors. Your files are processed locally in your browser and saved as downloadable copies. The visible page content is not edited, and your original files stay unchanged.
What "processed locally" means
- Your PDF files are not uploaded to a server
- Document properties are read and updated on your device
- PDF passwords are handled in your browser
- The updated PDFs and ZIP are created locally for download
PDF Properties You Can Change
Update the details stored with your document, from its title and author to the application names in its properties.
| Property | What it describes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | The document's stored title | Annual Report |
| Author | An author or organization name | Acme Studio |
| Subject | A short description of the document | Year-end financial summary |
| Keywords | Topic words stored with the PDF | report, finance, annual |
| Creator | The application used to create the source document | Microsoft Word |
| Producer | The software used to generate the PDF | Adobe Acrobat |
These are the six editable document-information fields. Dates and custom XMP records are not individually editable here.
Why Use CompressFly to Edit PDF Metadata?
Easy to Use
Correct a PDF's document details without searching through a full editing application's menus. The straightforward form keeps a small metadata update manageable.
Clearer Document Identity
A useful title and accurate author make stored document properties more meaningful. You can prepare a PDF whose details reflect the document you are actually sharing.
No Page Rebuilding
Metadata updates do not require recreating the visible document. Your page layout can stay as it is while outdated or incomplete properties are corrected.
No Installation Required
Update the PDF's properties directly in your browser. There is no desktop editor to install just to correct the information attached to a file.
Free Without Signup
A title or author correction does not need a paid software subscription. The metadata editor is available without registration or payment details.
Private File Editing
Document properties and PDF contents are handled on your device. The editor creates the updated copy locally without uploading the file for processing.
PDF Metadata Editor FAQ
How do I edit PDF metadata online?
Edit your PDF properties in three steps: 1. Add your PDF to view its current metadata. 2. Change the title, author, or other document-information fields. Leave the wipe option off to keep these values. 3. Click “Save changes” and download the updated PDF.
Can I change a PDF's title and author?
Yes. Edit the Title and Author fields to correct the document's stored title or author name. The PDF title is separate from its filename and the heading printed on the page; changing it does not rename your original file or rewrite that heading.
Can I edit metadata for multiple PDFs at once?
Yes. Add several PDFs and edit each file's details in the same workspace. The editor does not apply one file's values to every document. Save the updates together, then download the PDFs individually or in a ZIP; the files are not merged.
Can I remove an author name without clearing the other fields?
Yes. Clear the Author field and save the PDF with the wipe option off to remove that document-information entry while keeping the other fields. This only clears the Author entry; it does not remove the name from page content or other places in the file.
What does “Wipe all hidden metadata” do?
It clears metadata, including the values entered in the editable fields, rather than keeping your new title or author. The option applies to every PDF you save. Leave it off when editing properties. For a cleanup-only task, use the Remove PDF Metadata tool.
Can I edit creation dates or custom XMP metadata?
No. This editor provides Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer fields. It does not offer controls for creation or modification dates, custom properties, or individual XMP records.
Does editing PDF metadata change the text or page layout?
No. Updating document properties does not rewrite the visible text, images, or page layout. It also does not redact information printed on the pages. Use the Redact PDF tool when page content needs to be removed.
Can I edit PDF metadata for free without uploading my files?
Yes. Reading, editing, and saving take place locally in your browser. Your PDFs and passwords are not uploaded, and no account, credit card, or software installation is required.
