How Does N-up PDF Work?

The CompressFly N-up PDF tool places several source pages on each page of a new PDF, making documents more compact for handouts, review copies, and printing. Choose 2, 4, 8, or 16 pages per sheet and a paper size that suits the finished layout. Source pages are scaled proportionally to fit. Booklet mode uses a different arrangement, pairing pages so the document reads in order after double-sided printing and folding. Your PDFs are processed locally in your browser, and each source file produces a separate download.

What "processed locally" means

  • Your PDF files are not uploaded to a server
  • Page layout is created on your device
  • Passwords are handled in your browser
  • The finished PDFs and ZIP are generated locally

Choose a 2-up, 4-up, 8-up, or 16-up Layout

Fewer pages per sheet leave more room for detail. Larger layouts create a compact overview of the document.

LayoutUseful forA 16-page source becomes
2-upDocuments with smaller text or detailed diagrams8 output pages
4-upSlides, handouts, and review copies4 output pages
8-upCompact page overviews2 output pages
16-upThumbnail sheets and quick visual checks1 output page

These examples describe N-up output pages, not the number of physical sheets needed for double-sided printing.

N-up PDF or Booklet Layout?

Choose N-up for compact handouts, or Booklet when the printed pages will be folded into a small book.

A normal 2-up layout is not the same as booklet page order. A four-page booklet pairs pages 4 and 1 on one side, and pages 2 and 3 on the other.

Why Use CompressFly for N-up PDF?

Easy Handout Preparation

Put together compact PDF handouts without learning imposition software. The focused tool makes an everyday review or printing task easier to handle.

Convenient Page Overviews

Several source pages can be viewed together in a compact arrangement. This is useful for slide handouts and quick overviews where seeing the sequence matters more than full-size detail.

Ready to Share

The arranged layout is saved in the PDF itself. Other people receive the prepared document without having to recreate your multiple-pages-per-sheet setup.

Private and Free

Create your handouts locally in the browser without installing software or opening an account. Source PDFs stay on your device rather than being uploaded for processing.

N-up PDF FAQ

How do I put multiple PDF pages on one sheet?

Create an N-up PDF in three steps: 1. Add your PDF and select “N-up pages.” 2. Choose 2, 4, 8, or 16 pages per sheet and set the paper options. 3. Create the layout, review the result, and download the new PDF.

How can I put four PDF pages on one A4 page?

Choose “N-up pages,” set the page count to 4, and select A4 as the sheet size. Each output PDF page will contain up to four source pages. You can also choose the orientation, margins, and page borders.

Can I turn a PDF into a folded booklet?

Yes. Choose Booklet mode to pair pages for double-sided printing and folding. Each side contains two source pages, and blank pages are added when needed to complete a multiple of four.

Will the text still be readable with several pages on one sheet?

It depends on the original text size and the layout you choose. A 2-up layout leaves more room for detail, while 8-up and 16-up are better suited to compact overviews. Review the result at its intended print size before making multiple copies.

Which paper sizes are available, and what does Automatic mean?

Choose A4, Letter, Legal, or Tabloid. Automatic uses the first source page to select the closest of those four paper sizes; it does not preserve arbitrary custom dimensions.

Can I create N-up layouts for multiple PDFs at once?

Yes. The same layout settings are applied to each PDF, and every source produces a separate result. Download the PDFs individually or together in a ZIP. To arrange pages from different files in one document, combine them with the Merge PDF tool first.

Can I arrange only selected pages from a PDF?

This tool processes the complete PDF. Use the Extract PDF Pages tool first to create a file containing only the pages you want, then apply the N-up or booklet layout.

How should I print the downloaded N-up or booklet PDF?

Print one output PDF page per side, because the layout is already included in the file. Do not apply another multiple-pages-per-sheet or booklet arrangement in the print dialog. For the landscape booklet output, use double-sided printing with short-edge flipping and check one folded copy first.
